Do you have goals and plans for your life? What about for your online business? In my business coaching experience, I've come across many small business owners who don't have a vision for their business. Many of them run great businesses, but they don't have any defined goals. Having a vision for your business will help you stay on track and can save you time and money. Think of a vision as a long term goal for your business. Ideally, your vision for your online business will help you achieve your personal goals as well. There's no point having a personal goal of not having to work again and travel the world if you create an online business that requires your attention for 10 hours each day. A good start is to write out your personal goals and then think about the characteristics of an online business that will work in harmony with your personal goals. You can then give some thought to a vision for that business.
Do you want your business to me a market leader? Is there a certain level of revenue or profit you'd like to earn? What staff will you employ? What will your role be in the business? What will you sell? Who are your customers? What are their needs and how will your business help them to meet those needs?
Essentially your vision is a snapshot of where you'd like the business to be in the future. Why is this important to do?
Having a clear vision gives you some direction. If you have a clear objective, then you can evaluate every business opportunity that comes along to see if it's in line with your vision. You may have a goal to be well known for a certain type of product. If an opportunity comes along to sell something completely different, how does this stack up in terms of your vision? Do you do it to chase some short term money at the expense of achieving your long term goals? Or do you pass on the offer because it doesn't fit with the type of business you're trying to build. Taking the time to decide on your business vision can be one of the best things you can do. Rather than rushing off to register domain names and searching out affiliate deals, take some time instead to decide on the type of business you want to build and how you want it to look in the future.
